THE MASTER CLASS E-GROUP

THE BASICS

Welcome to a FREE moderated e-group for professional storytellers in-training: your own online film school. You’re welcome to casually lurk, or get totally involved. There’s shop talk, monthly goal setting challenges, announcements for new aBF classes, a place to give and get feedback for your work from peers, and if I have time, I’ll even throw in my views on your work too. All free.

THE DETAILS

Shop Talk:
-- Members post news, share links to new filmmaking sites they find, ask craft theory questions, debate the answers, etc... I’ll post at least once per week to help keep the conversations cooking, and my team will moderate posts to keep the content quality high. Although this is an online film school, we want the level of conversation to be fully professional and dynamic.

Get and Give Feedback:
-- Post a link to the cut of your current film, or maybe a logline to your new script, and/or maybe show us the key art to your new movie poster. Then get excellent, compassionate feedback from your peers. You'll also sharpen your own understanding and ability to articulate your craft ideas by sharing your opinions on other people’s work. To make sure this is a safe circle to share ideas, the guidelines for giving feedback are strict: it must be honest and respectful or else it will be filtered out. Also, if I have time, and if your work can be reviewed in less than 5 minutes, I’ll even throw in my views on your process too.

Monthly Goal-Setting Challenge:
-- This self-accountability tool has powered my process in my own professional online writing group that I founded years ago. And I’m thrilled to be sharing it with you guys too. At the beginning of each month, I lay out my intentions for the weeks ahead: project milestones I aim to hit, strategy, tactics, and more. A month later, I check-in again and see what worked, notice what fell short, learn from both, then set more goals for the new month ahead. You’re welcome to do the same for your own goals and/or just read about other people’s trial, error and triumph process.

Announcements for New Classes at aBF:
-- Be the first to hear about new online film school classes as soon as they’re announced. It’s very possible that our new classes will fill up fast because the class size is so small and prices are so low. Being in this e-group will give you the best shot at getting in. Alternatively, you’re also welcome to ONLY receive announcements about new classes, and not the other Master Class e-mails. To do this just sign up for the e-group, visit the YahooGroups site, click on “Edit Membership,” scroll down to: “Step 2. Message Delivery” and check to receive only the “Special Notices.”

TUITION

It’s totally free.

Why? Because A) I want to help support your process the best way I know how, within my means. So this community will give you a few basic services you’ll love, and yet only require minimal time from me to support it. And B) I’m confident once you get to know me you’ll be far more likely to consider my paid services as the need arises. That being said, there will be no hard selling. This is a group to serve your needs whether or not you ever become a paying client.

E-GROUP POSTING GUIDELINES

The rules are simple. Failure to follow them will result in your e-mail getting rejected. If we have time, we’ll explain why, otherwise you’ve gotta figure it out for yourself (there are only 4 rules!) or e-mail us for an explanation. Repeat offenders will be warned twice and after a 3rd violation, removed from the group.

Rules:
#1 - Be respectful. Either genuinely try to help, or don’t post at all.

#2 - Change the subject heading to reflect the current e-mail subject. As threads change, so should the subject heading.

#3 - DELETE everything in your e-mail, other than the point you’re responding to and the text from your new post. Many people read messages lumped together in one long e-mail digest and it’s agonizing to scroll through dead text when reading a digest.

#4 - First Post Format. In your very first post, use the subject head: INTRO FOR: [your full name]
And answer these questions:
- What are some of your favorite stories and storytellers, in any art form?
- What have you done so far, in any storytelling format?
- What are your long term ambitions?
- What would you like to get from this Master Class?
